Statement

難関校であるほど審査基準に占める割合が高いといわれているステートメントとはどういうものなのか。以下、昨年の出題例である。なお、教材のCD-ROMには上位校のエッセイ内容は全て網羅されている。

出題例

General Instructions: Please describe (in a word-processing document that you upload or manually enter below) your general academic plans in a statement of about 500 words. For specific essay instructions from your prospective department, see below.

International Relations: Please upload a statement of your academic plans. Describe your main academic interests, why you wish to study for the deGRE®Teste you have chosen, why you wish to study at Syracuse University, any work or international experience you may have, and plans for the future after you receive your deGRE®Teste.

Public Administration: Please address the following questions in a clear and concise manner (entire statement not to exceed 2-3 pages double spaced):

Statement of Purpose

The Richard & Rhoda Goldman School of Public Policy welcomes applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds and with a variety of career aspirations. Some of our students have had prior experience in the realm of public policy; others have not. It is helpful to us to know more about your background, your motivation, and your long-term goals than can be inferred from your records and references. We would appreciate your helping us by supplying a brief statement of 3-5 pages, double-spaced. Please address some of these areas:

• The present: Why do you want to take an educational program in the analysis and management of public policy?
• The past: What experiences or activities bear on your qualifications for this program, e.g., research papers, study groups, job responsibilities, policy or political projects? How do these experiences relate to your decision to undertake the study of public policy analysis and management? If you have beenout of school for a year or more, please indicate the positions you have held and your major activities. A vita or resume is strongly recommended.
• The future: What kinds of work and activity would you like to engage in following graduation, and what are your long-range career objectives?

UC, Berkeleyは他校では要求されない Anayltic Essay があり、仮想問題とはいえ手強い問題である。

Carnegie, Heinz

Required Essay: Please upload an essay of approximately 1,000 words describing your academic and professional background, your career goals, and how the program will help you achieve your goals.

Optional Essay: Please upload an essay in which you comment on any item(s) in your application that you think worthy of further explanation. We are most interested in having you address any weaknesses or strengths that bear on your application.

他のMPAやMSなども同じであるが、Statementは通常1題で、その指示はかなりザックリとして一般的である。5～6題もあり具体的な指示のあるMBAのエッセイ課題を読んだことがある受講生であれば戸惑うかもしれない。

Statementの指示が明確で具体的でないということは、どういうパラグラフをどういう構造で組み立てるかがポイントになる。ステートメントを書き始める一番最初のカウンセリングではカウンセラーがまずパラグラフを展開するキーワードを指導するので、それに基づき草稿を作成すること。

長さ

文章の長さは500ワードまでといった「語数」による指示と、ダブル･スペースで3枚までといった「頁数」による指示と、何も指示が無い場合がある。注意すべきはダブル･スペースという指示で、使用する用紙・マージンの設定・使用するフォント・フォントのサイズなどにより1頁に入る語数が50～100語前後違ってくる。3枚だと最大で300語も違ってくるので、アピールする内容そのものが変わってくる。CD-ROM教材のDouble-Spaceとそのサンプルを参照のこと。（300語あれば、1～2パラグラフ追加できるのでアピールポイントを増やすことが可）

サンプル

受講生が作成して提出したサンプル（英語）がファイルされている。ただし、個人名や会社名などの固有名詞を抜き、かつ、特定できる情報をすべて削除するのであれば、後進のために開示するのはやぶさかではないといる了解を取り付けたものであるから、文脈が切れているものもある。

省庁からの派遣、独立行政法人からの派遣、インフラ系の民間企業からの派遣、転職のための奨学費留学などサンプルがある。

なお、独自性が薄まるので、サンプルをカウンセリングの最初から読むことはできない。パラグラフの展開も充分でき、英語で推敲もかなり進んだ段階で読むことができる。ただし、推薦状のサンプルは最初から読むことができる。

学院内で読むことが義務付けられており、コピーはできない。ただし、PCの持込は可能。
