Health Industry Management
Over the next few years, the United States is expected to increase its healthcare spending to over 2 trillion dollars. Internationally, healthcare costs are also rising rapidly, and many nations are looking to our country for models to help them deal with this problem. Simultaneously, an explosion of technology has occurred that will require managers have a new set of skills, coupled with knowledge of traditional healthcare organizations. To meet the educational challenges of this rapidly evolving field, the Health Industry Management (HIM) Program provides students with a managerial and technical foundation for careers in consulting, medical products, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, financial services, venture capital, health care systems, health plan management and insurance, associations and government. Students interested in health industry management complete several majors at the Kellogg School. Program faculty advisors meet with students to customize their course selection based on past experience and career goals. Research opportunities are also available for students who want to work with a faculty member on a focused project.
Health Enterprise Management
The Health Enterprise Management (HEMA) major meets the needs of any management student who seeks to excel in either the services or products side of the health industry. Many HEMA courses are taught by some of the world’s leading scholars in a wide range of academic fields. Other HEMA classes are taught by practitioners who have reached the very top of their professions. All HEMA offerings emphasize the importance of translating fundamental management principles into state-of-the-art tools for practitioners. HEMA graduates compete successfully for jobs in provider, insurer and supplier organizations, as well as in consulting, investment banking and other related sectors of the economy. The HEMA major combines flexibility with depth. The cornerstone of the HEMA major is the introductory core course, which presents a body of common knowledge necessary to anyone managing in the health sector. Students must take three additional courses from a lengthy list, some of which emphasize themes common to the services and products side, and some of which are specific to each track. There are no prerequisites for the major and students with no prior experience in the health sector are invited to sample HEMA courses.
