Essays (2011年)

If you are interested in the Health Sector Management concentration or a joint deGRE®Teste program, please address in this essay.
-
How will your background, values, and non-work activities enhance the experience of other Duke MBA students and add value to Fuqua's diverse culture?
Long Essays - For essay 1, please answer only one of the three essay options provided. All applicants should answer question 2.
-
Please respond fully and concisely to one of the following three essay topics. Clearly identify which question you have selected.
-
Describe an example of where you were challenged to lead in a team-oriented context. What was the challenge you faced, how did you address it, and what takeaways or lessons learned have you successfully applied in other leadership situations?
-
Describe a situation in which your ability to perform ethically was challenged. What was the issue, how did you handle it, and what did you learn from it?
-
Describe a significant leadership failure in your life. What did you learn from this failure? How has it impacted who you are today and the kind of leader you would like to be?
-
How has your personal history and family background influenced your intellectual and personal development? What unique personal qualities or life experiences distinguish you from other applicants? Note: The goal of this essay is to get a sense of who you are, rather than what you have achieved professionally.
Essays are an opportunity to share your perspective directly with the admissions committee. The goal of our essays is to gain a GRE®Testater understanding of why you want to pursue an MBA, what you will bring to Duke, in addition to the experiences you have had that shape your unique perspective. In particular, we would like to address the difference between the second short and long essays. In short essay two, we would like to understand in what ways you will contribute to and engage in The Duke MBA classroom and GRE®Testater community. How have your experiences prepared you to contribute to the learning environment and collaborative leadership culture we have at Duke? In long essay two, we would like to better understand how your personal history shapes the life journey you have taken and how it has influenced who you are today. What unique perspective and experiences distinguish you from other applicants to our program?

GMAT
Official GMAT score reports must be sent to Fuqua's office of admissions directly from the GMAT testing service. Please use The Duke MBA Daytime (fulltime) program code Q13-N5-32 on your GMAT exam. You must request that your official score be sent to Fuqua prior to your application round deadline. We will accept GMAT scores up to five years old. However, we will keep official scores sent to Fuqua for one academic year. If you have taken the GMAT multiple times, please report your highest score.
English Language Proficiency Tests
If you did not earn an undergraduate deGRE®Teste from a school whose primary language of instruction is English, you must submit a valid Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL®Test) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score. This requirement is waived for international applicants holding non-technical master or Ph.D. deGRE®Testes from colleges or universities located inside the United States, or for international students whose undergraduate institution was instructed in English.
Transcripts
Your application for admission to The Duke MBA must include a self-reported transcript for each college or university you have attended. It must contain information included on your official transcript about all courses taken, including incomplete courses, courses taken pass/fail, and dates taken, their grades, deGRE®Teste(s) earned and award(s). Please report grades and scores using the scale employed by your college or university. If your institution does not use a 4.0 GPA scale, you must accurately describe the grading scale used. Do not convert scores to a 4.0 GPA scale.
A Microsoft Excel file is available for download on the online application Web site that will facilitate your submission. Alternately, you may submit a legible, scanned copy of your official transcript(s) issued by colleges or universities you have attended.
If you are admitted to The Duke MBA, you are required to submit official transcripts from each college or university you have attended for verification. You must ensure all necessary official transcripts are received by The Duke MBA Office of Admissions before the required deadline: June 2, 2008 if you applied for admission in round one or round two, and June 16, 2008 if you applied for admission in round three. We recommend you use a parcel service that offers tracking and proof of delivery.
Failure to submit official transcripts on time, or any misrepresentation, falsification, or omission of information, is grounds for automatic revocation of any offer of admission and financial assistance.
To facilitate the collection and submission of official transcripts, a Transcript Request Form has been provided in the downloadable forms section. You may send a completed Transcript Request Forms to the registrar of each college or university you have attended to request official transcripts. We must receive the official transcripts by the stated deadline.
Detailed directions for self-reported transcripts are included in the online application.
Two Recommendations
We require two letters of recommendation. The most valuable recommendations come from people who know your professional skills and abilities. We encourage you to submit at least one recommendation from someone who knows you well in your current position and can critique your professional performance, such as a current supervisor. Please note that an application is not considered complete until we have received both recommendations. We encourage you to utilize the online recommendation system in order to expedite the processing of your application. Applicants do have the option of submitting hard copies of the recommendation form. If hard copy recommendations are submitted, they should be included with your transcripts in one package.
Nonrefundable Application Fee
The Fuqua School of Business requires a $185.00 USD application fee, payable by Visa or MasterCard. The application fee is paid electronically when you submit the online application form.
Interview
Interviews are not required, but are strongly encouraged for all candidates. Interviews are conducted by admissions staff, alumni and admissions fellows (select second year MBA students). All candidates are encouraged to come to campus for an interview. Applicants living outside of the United States and in select cities on the west coast of the U.S. have the option to request an alumni interview. All interviews are evaluated equally regardless of location or interviewer.
All campus interviews are scheduled through our online scheduling system, and can be scheduled prior to submitting your application.
To schedule an alumni interview, you must request the alumni interview and location on the online application. Once we receive your application, we will schedule an alumni interview and send an e-mail confirmation to you. Please allow two weeks from the application deadline date to receive this message. Alumni interviews are based on the availability of alumni. The U.S. cities and international countries where alumni interviews are currently offered are subject to change.

GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test)
All applicants are required to take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). The GMAT is offered only as a computer adaptive test in the U.S. Pearson VUE administers the GMAT, and Darden's Program Code is KC7-0X-86. We evaluate only GMAT results from tests taken prior to submission of the application. The highest score is used, but we do not combine scores from multiple tests. Scores are valid for five years. Unofficial, self-reported scores will be used for evaluation purposes. However, offers of admission are not binding until official scores are received. If discrepancies are found between self-reported and official scores, the offer of admission will be withdrawn.
TOEFL®Test
As much as 50% of a student's grade at Darden depends upon active oral participation in the classroom. The University of Virginia requires demonstrated English proficiency. The recommended way to demonstrate English proficiency is to submit a TOEFL®Test score. Ask the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to report your TOEFL®Test score to Darden. Darden's ETS code is 5820. The department code is 02.
Résumé
Please prepare a business résumé (as opposed to an academic c.v.) that includes your employment history in reverse chronological order, with titles, dates, and whether you worked part-time or full-time. As part of this résumé, also include a similar education history that includes dates and deGRE®Testes, listed in reverse chronological order. The résumé should not be more than one page long.
Essays (2011年)
Use your best judgment in determining the appropriate length of your essays. The essay question fields are large enough for you to answer each question thoroughly. Use the essays to display your writing skills and tell us more about yourself. You will be asked to organize a persuasive argument to show us how you think about and approach business challenges. Emphasize those experiences, values, and goals that are most important and meaningful to you. Be sincere and be specific. Tell us what particular experiences and expertise you will bring to the mix.

Recommendations
We require two recommendations which address the questions asked on our Recommendation Form. Additional recommendations may be submitted, but they should offer additional and valuable insight. Generally, work-related recommendations are more valuable than academic-related recommendations. We prefer that recommenders with web access and an email address submit their recommendations electronically. After you have contacted the recommenders about providing the recommendation, complete the form on the Recommender's page and check the "Please email this person a recommendation request" beneath each recommender you wish us to contact. They will be sent an email message with instructions and a web address to go to in order to complete your recommendation. To submit paper-based recommendations, you should download the Recommendation Form, print one copy for each recommender, and follow the directions provided on the form.
Interviews
An evaluative interview is conducted by invitation only after your application has been submitted and reviewed by the Admissions Committee. Interviews play a critical role in our assessment of candidates and are required prior to acceptance into the program. An invitation to interview is a positive indicator no matter when you receive it. Candidates living in the U.S. must interview on the Darden Grounds with a member of the Admissions staff or Student Admissions Committee. Candidates living abroad are welcome to interview on the Darden Grounds, but are not expected to do so. International interviews are conducted by alumni or Admissions Committee members during recruiting trips.
Self-reported Transcripts
Submitting unofficial transcripts of your academic work using the Microsoft Word Transcript Template in the online application substantially accelerates application processing. Note that we have included a generous section for additional information you may use to explain your institution's grading system, list examination marks, special certificates, etc. As an alternative to using the online Transcript Template, have your academic records sent to us from the institutions where you studied. Applicants who completed their education in a non-English-speaking institution will need to make arrangements to have their academic records translated and sent with the official transcript. All translations must be complete and literal versions of the original records. If you use the Transcript Template and are offered admission, you will be required to provide official transcripts of all previous academic work. If there are discrepancies between self-reported academic information and official transcripts, the offer of admission will be withdrawn. Offers of admission are not binding until academic records are verified.
Residency/In-State Status
The Residency section of the application requests information related to verification of residency to establish in-state status for Virginia residents. Residency status is assigned by the Virginia Status Office at the University. Visit the Virginia Status Office at the University or call (434) 982-3391 if you need more information.
Application Fee
A non-refundable application fee of $190 must accompany the application. Online application fees must be paid by credit card (Visa or MasterCard). Credit card payments are processed through Darden's secure server using ViaKlix. Also, the application fee can be paid by check, money order or cashier's check. For application fee waiver information, visit the Frequently Asked Questions webpage.
Honor Code
Founded in 1842, the Honor System is one of the University’s most cherished institutions. Based on the principle that University students want to be trusted, the Honor System helps create and strengthen a school-wide community of trust. Students who enroll at the University benefit from the freedom and security provided by the Honor System; every student must aGRE®Teste to live by and support the spirit of honor. Applicants who are not prepared to embrace this freedom and accept this responsibility should not apply for admission. If you have further questions, please call the Committee at (434) 924-7602 or visit the Honor Committee webpage. Further information on the Honor System can be found in the Darden Record. Details of the background and operation of the Honor System are fully explained during Darden Orientation.
