ロー・スクール留学

Letter of Recommendation (推薦状)

ロー・スクールの場合、推薦状は通常2通必要で、2通とも法学部の教授もしくは1通は法学部の教授でもう1通は上司という組み合わせを要求される。3年以上の職務経験があれば教授からの推薦状は不要とするのはMBA独自の例外であり、ロー・スクールを筆頭に公共政策学でも金融工学でも教授からの推薦状は必須となる。

勿論、教授というタイトルには固執しないので、ゼミの教授が准教授や助教授であっても全く問題はない。 過去には講師や客員教授の場合もあった。司法研修所の教官に推薦状を頼むこともできるが、知己期間を調整する必要がある。推薦者は出願者を最低1年以上知っていなければ有効な推薦状とはみなされず、推薦状用紙の中に How long have you known the applicant?　Under what circumstances? という質問があるのはその確認のためである。

記載内容は推薦状の用紙を用意してあるロー・スクールのフォーマット及び指示項目を参考にすれば見当は付く。

なお、推薦状の用紙を用意していないスクールのほうが多いので、推薦状は推薦者が所属する機関の英文便箋(Letterhead)を使用することになる。

サンプルは教授、助教授、講師、パートナー、法務部部長、顧問弁護士などを用意してあるので、受付に申し込むこと。コピーは許されていないが、PCの持込可。

以下、スクールからの推薦状に関する指示である。

Columbia

(Forms are not provided) We require two original letters of recommendation from your law school professors, employers, supervisors, or other persons qualified to appraise your academic potential for graduate legal studies. At least one letter should come from a law school professor. "To Whom It May Concern" letters (which tend to be very general), letters from friends, and letters from prominent persons who have not supervised your work are not helpful. Please do not submit more than two letters. Even if you indicate that you are submitting more than two letters of recommendation, we will consider an application complete once we have received two letters of recommendation and all other required supporting documentation.

New York

One academic letter of recommendation is required for the LL.M. program. You may submit only one additional academic or professional letter if you wish to do so. We strongly prefer that your recommender submit his or her recommendation using the NYU School of Law online recommendation form because this allows faster processing of your application.

Duke

A minimum of two letters of recommendation for LL.M. candidates and three letters of recommendation for S.J.D. candidates should be submitted on behalf of the applicant. At least one letter should be from a faculty member well acquainted with the applicant’s academic ability.

University of Southern California

Please have two people: one law professor and one employer OR two law professors, write a letter of recommendation in English on their letterhead.

Curriculum Vitae, Resume (履歴書　経歴書)

ロー・スクールに出願するには履歴書は必須。 指示には While resumes are not requiredとかIf possibleとかの表現があっても用意する。この手の表現は必要だと言っているのと同じである。

ロー・スクールへ提出する履歴書で注意すべきは、MBAと違い1頁ではなく、数頁にわたることが多い点である。One-page Resumeでなければ違反のように言われることがあるが、One-Page ResumeとはアメリカのMBAで就職活動に使う形式で、ロー・スクールは場合はResumeより Curriculum Vitaeとしての要素が強い。

即ち、Curriculum Vitaeは最低で2頁はあり、より詳細な概要が記載されているものである。アメリカでは学術的な色が濃い上級研究員や特別研究員に頻繁に使用され、研究奨学金や研究助成金などの申請に必須である。

なお、サンプルを用意してあるので、受付に申し込むこと。コピーは許されていないが、PCの持込可。

Columbia

Resume or Curriculum Vitae : While resumes are not required, you may submit one for consideration as part of your application. Individuals applying for an Associates-in-Law position must include one with their applications.

Duke

If possible, enclose a resume, although it will not replace the personal statement.

Georgetown

Prepare a resume or Curriculum Vitae describing your academic and professional background. Educational information should include schools attended, dates of attendance, deGRE®Teste(s) awarded, class rank, activities and organizations, academic honors, awards, scholarships or fellowships, and any original research including publications. Employment history should include employer, position, nature of work, and dates of employment. Feel free to include as many pages as necessary to provide complete details on your background and experience.

Harvard

14. Occupational experience: List below your experience in law or law-related fields; include any full-time employment in any other field only if it lasted a year or more. In each case provide dates (from/to), name and location of employer, and a brief description of the position, starting with your current occupation. If teaching, indicate whether the position is/was in a law faculty and whether full- or part-time. If you are not currently employed or in school, what are you now doing?

If you wish, you may also provide a curriculum vitae or resume on an attached sheet, including, where applicable: education, academic honors, publications, and work experience.

New York

You must also electronically attach to your application a resume; it may be one to two pages in length.

University of Chicago

A description - in the form of a resume, curriculum vitae, or similar document - of your academic and professional background. This should include the following items: name, address, e-mail address, phone number, fax number, any academic honors you have received (describe as fully as necessary the significance of any honors or distinctions so that the Graduate Studies Committee may compare your academic performance with others), scholarly publications, employment in law or related fields including employer, title, dates of employment, and description of duties, membership of honorary, professional, or other societies. It may be helpful to look at the sample resume PDF posted on our Web page before preparing this document.
