Statement

難関校であるほど審査基準に占める割合が高いといわれているステートメントとはどういうものなのか。以下、昨年の出題例である。なお、教材のCD-ROMには上位20校のエッセイ内容は全て網羅されている。

出題例

Columbia

You must submit a detailed Personal Statement describing your background, academic interests, the program of study you wish to follow and your reasons for doing so. This statement should be prepared without assistance from others, and should not exceed three double-spaced pages. Your application will not be considered without such a statement. We will not accept a resume or curriculum vitae in place of the Personal Statement.

New York

Please electronically attach to your application a brief statement of no more than 500 words. You may describe your professional interests and goals or, since the Committee on Graduate Admissions does not grant interviews, you may use the statement to describe aspects of yourself and/or your work that are not apparent from your other application materials. You should include your reasons and qualifications for applying for a particular program or specialization.

University of Pennsylvania

Please submit a personal statement, of no more than two typed pages, addressing your reasons for pursuing a graduate deGRE®Teste at Penn Law. Your essay may describe how Penn Law would complement earlier studies or prepare you for future professional work; your interest in a particular legal field and its application to existing issues in your country or the world; or more broadly how your study here would serve other goals or interests.

Duke

The personal statement should provide additional information, such as, special areas of interest, previous overseas experience, career goals, and any particular interest in the Duke LLM program. If possible, enclose a resume, although it will not replace the personal statement.

UCLA

The most important aspect of the LL.M. application is the personal statement, which asks applicants to describe their objectives in pursuing graduate legal studies. Discuss any matters relevant to your ability to succeed in law school and the practice of law and any attributes, experiences or interests that would enable you to make a distinctive contribution to UCLA Law or the legal profession. The personal statement should be typed double-spaced in 12-point font, and should not exceed three pages in length.

他のMPAやMSなども同じであるが、Statementは通常1題で、その指示はかなりザックリとして一般的である。5～6題もあり具体的な指示のあるMBAのエッセイ課題を読んだことがある受講生であれば戸惑うかもしれない。

Statementの指示が明確で具体的でないということは、どういうパラグラフをどういう構造で組み立てるかがポイントになる。ステートメントを書き始める一番最初のカウンセリングではカウンセラーがまずパラグラフを展開するキーワードを指導するので、それに基づき草稿を作成すること。

以下、Harvardのエッセイで上述したスクールより多少は具体的である。

Harvard

17. Personal Statement: Please read parts (a) and (b) below carefully and write an essay addressing both questions, with part (a) constituting at least half of the total length. Your entire statement should be no more than 1,500 words - anything exceeding the word limit will be disallowed. Please type or word-process your statement, with your full name on the top of each page and your signature at the end, and attach it to your application.

(a) Briefly describe either an important issue in your field of interest or a current legal problem facing a particular country, region, or the world, and then propose a theoretical framework or a legal analysis or strategy to address this issue.

(b) Please tell us something about yourself - in particular, why you wish to pursue an LL.M. deGRE®Teste at Harvard and how doing so connects with what you have done in the past and what you plan to do in the future.

Important: Your personal statement must address the above questions specifically, and must be solely the product of your own efforts. We reserve the right to disqualify a statement written by, or with the help of, someone other than the applicant.

18. Academic interests: Please describe the areas of your academic interest, including a list of three to five courses in which you are most interested. If you are interested in pursuing the concentration in international finance, tax, or corporate law and governance, or in the six-credit LL.M. Thesis option, please so indicate. (Note: Please limit your response to no more than 200 words.)

19. Career plans: What are your career plans (both short-term and long-term) after you complete your graduate law studies? (Check no more than 3)

長さ

文章の長さは500ワードまでといった「語数」による指示と、ダブル･スペースで3枚までといった「頁数」による指示と、何も指示が無い場合がある。注意すべきはダブル･スペースという指示で、使用する用紙・マージンの設定・使用するフォント・フォントのサイズなどにより1頁に入る語数が50～100語前後違ってくる。3枚だと最大で300語も違ってくるので、アピールする内容そのものが変わってくる。CD-ROM教材のDouble-Spaceとそのサンプルを参照のこと。（300語あれば、1～2パラグラフ追加できるのでアピールポイントを増やすことが可）

サンプル

LL.M.のカウンセリングを始めたのは1998年からなので過去の受講生が作成して提出したサンプル（英語）は多数ファイルされている。ただし、「個人名や会社名などの固有名詞を抜き、かつ、特定できる情報をすべて削除するのであれば、後進のために開示するのはやぶさかではない」という了解を取り付けたものであるから、文脈が切れているものもある。以下、保管されているサンプルである。

なお、独自性が薄まるので、サンプルをカウンセリングの最初から読むことはできない。パラグラフの展開も充分でき、英語の推敲もかなり進んだ段階で読むことができる。ただし、推薦状のサンプルは最初から読むことができる。

学院内で読むことが義務付けられており、コピーはできない。ただし、PCの持込は可能。
