Statement

難関校であるほど審査基準に占める割合が高いといわれているステートメントとはどういうものなのか。以下、昨年の出題例である。なお、教材のCD-ROMには上位校のエッセイ内容は全て網羅されている。

Columbia

In a statement of approximately 500 words, describe your background, your past work in your intended field of study, and your plans for graduate study and a professional career. If you are presently in a graduate program at another university, please explain why you wish to leave. If you have not yet come to a decision about your career, or if your plans are tentative, please do not hesitate to say so.

MIT

Please give your reasons for wishing to do graduate work in the field you have chosen. Prepare your statement of objectives and goals in whatever form clearly presents your views. Include as far as you can, your particular interests, be they experimental, theoretical, or issue-oriented, and show how your background and MIT’s programs support these interests. The statement could be much like a proposal for graduate studies, in the more specific context of your professional objectives. You should set forth the issues and problems you wish to address. Explain your longer-term professional goals. The Admissions Committee will welcome any factors you wish to bring to its attention concerning your academic and work experience to date.

PERSONAL STATEMENT As part of our evaluation of your candidacy, the Admissions Committee requires a sample of writing as an indication of how our program relates to your goals. Please consider the following topics when writing your personal statement, which should be a minimum of 250 words.

A. Describe the career aspiration that makes a professional deGRE®Teste in your elected discipline appropriate for you.

B. Answer the question: To what extent has your background prepared you for the professional education you now seek?

他のMSやLLMなども同じであるが、Statementは通常1題で、その指示はかなりザックリとして一般的である。5～6題もあり具体的な指示のあるMBAのエッセイ課題を読んだことがある受講生であれば戸惑うかもしれない。

Statementの指示が明確で具体的でないということは、どういうパラグラフをどういう構造で組み立てるかがポイントになる。ステートメントを書き始める一番最初のカウンセリングではカウンセラーがまずパラグラフを展開するキーワードを指導するので、それに基づき草稿を作成すること。

MSに比べてWhartonのMBA Real Estate Majorのエッセイ課題は具体的である。

Wharton

Essay 1 (Required): Describe your career proGRE®Testss to date and your future short-term and long-term career goals. How do you expect a Wharton MBA to help you achieve these goals, and why is now the best time for you to join our program? (1,000 words)

Essay 2 (Required): Describe a failure or setback that you have experienced. What role did you play and what did you learn about yourself? (500 words)

Essay 3 (Required): Tell us about a situation in which you were an outsider. What did you learn from the experience? (500 words)

Essay 4 (Required): Please Complete One Of The Following Two Questions:

Essay 5 (Optional): If you feel there are extenuating circumstances of which the Committee should be aware, please explain them here (e.g., unexplained gaps in work experience, choice of recommenders, TOEFL®Test waiver request, inconsistent or questionable academic performance, significant weaknesses in your application). (250 words)

長さ

文章の長さは500ワードまでといった「語数」による指示と、ダブル･スペースで3枚までといった「頁数」による指示と、何も指示が無い場合がある。注意すべきはダブル･スペースという指示で、使用する用紙・マージンの設定・使用するフォント・フォントのサイズなどにより1頁に入る語数が50～100語前後違ってくる。3枚だと最大で300語も違ってくるので、アピールする内容そのものが変わってくる。CD-ROM教材のDouble-Spaceとそのサンプルを参照のこと。（300語あれば、1～2パラグラフ追加できるのでアピールポイントを増やすことが可）

サンプル

受講生が作成して提出したサンプル（英語）がファイルされている。ただし、個人名や会社名などの固有名詞を抜き、かつ、特定できる情報をすべて削除するのであれば、後進のために開示するのはやぶさかではないといる了解を取り付けたものであるから、文脈が切れているものもある。

大手ゼネコン、大手不動産会社、省庁、独立行政法人、銀行、協会、研究所からの企業派遣や転職のための私費留学などのステートメントサンプルがあるので受け付けに申し出ること。

なお、独自性が薄まるので、サンプルをカウンセリングの最初から読むことはできない。パラグラフの展開も充分でき、英語で推敲もかなり進んだ段階で読むことができる。ただし、推薦状のサンプルは最初から読むことができる。

学院内で読むことが義務付けられており、コピーはできない。ただし、PCの持込は可能。
