Statement

難関校であるほど審査基準に占める割合が高いといわれているステートメントとはどういうものなのか。以下、昨年の出題例である。なお、教材のCD-ROMには上位校のエッセイ内容は全て網羅されている。

出題例

Your statement should be typed, single-spaced and no longer than two pages. It should state why you are interested in pursuing a deGRE®Teste in Financial Mathematics, any current or past employment or internship in the financial industry (which may compensate for a less impressive mathematical background), and what type of employment or studies you plan to pursue upon graduation. If you are applying to Stanford together with another person (siblings, couples, etc) and would not accept admission if both were not admitted, please let us know this as well.

Explain your view of the finance industry, why you are attracted to it, and what aspects of it you are most interested in. Explain why you have chosen quantitative finance in general and our program in particular. Describe your career plans and goals as clearly as you have them. This can range from: ``a career somewhere in the finance industry'' to: ``running a desk trading exotic emerging market credit derivatives at BNP in London leveraging my language skills and knowledge of Latin American markets''. Describe your background and how it relates to your career plans. What motivated you to choose quantitative finance and why do you feel it is a good choice for you? Describe what you have done to learn about the finance industry and prepare yourself for our program. If quantitative finance represents a change in your career path, explain your decision to switch. Feel free to give other information that will help us understand your application better. Be concise.

Carnegie Mellon

Essay A (Required for Full and Part-Time Applicants)
What are your reasons for undertaking graduate study in the field of computational finance? Please describe how your future career plans relate to your experience, your education and your proposed training at Carnegie Mellon University. Describe your short-term and long-term objectives and how you plan to achieve them.

ESSAY B (Required for Full and Part-Time Applicants)
Describe your background and preparation in the four concentration areas of the MSCF program – finance, computer science, math and statistics. In particular, detail your background in calculus-based probability.

他のMSやLLMなども同じであるが、Statementは通常1題で、その指示はかなりザックリとして一般的である。5～6題もあり具体的な指示のあるMBAのエッセイ課題を読んだことがある受講生であれば戸惑うかもしれない。

Statementの指示が明確で具体的でないということは、どういうパラグラフをどういう構造で組み立てるかがポイントになる。ステートメントを書き始める一番最初のカウンセリングではカウンセラーがまずパラグラフを展開するキーワードを指導するので、それに基づき草稿を作成すること。

長さ

文章の長さは500ワードまでといった「語数」による指示と、ダブル･スペースで3枚までといった「頁数」による指示と、何も指示が無い場合がある。注意すべきはダブル･スペースという指示で、使用する用紙・マージンの設定・使用するフォント・フォントのサイズなどにより1頁に入る語数が50～100語前後違ってくる。3枚だと最大で300語も違ってくるので、アピールする内容そのものが変わってくる。CD-ROM教材のDouble-Spaceとそのサンプルを参照のこと。（300語あれば、1～2パラグラフ追加できるのでアピールポイントを増やすことが可）

サンプル

受講生が作成して提出したサンプル（英語）がファイルされている。ただし、個人名や会社名などの固有名詞を抜き、かつ、特定できる情報をすべて削除するのであれば、後進のために開示するのはやぶさかではないといる了解を取り付けたものであるから、文脈が切れているものもある。

生損保の保険会社、政府系及び民間の銀行、大手証券会社、省庁、独立行政法人からの企業派遣や転職のための私費留学などのステートメントサンプルがあるので受け付けに申し出ること。

なお、独自性が薄まるので、サンプルをカウンセリングの最初から読むことはできない。パラグラフの展開も充分でき、英語で推敲もかなり進んだ段階で読むことができる。ただし、推薦状のサンプルは最初から読むことができる。

学院内で読むことが義務付けられており、コピーはできない。ただし、PCの持込は可能。
